Description of the portfolio company
Biomas was founded by a coalition of Brazilian companies in 2022 to restore and protect, over the next 20 years, 4 million hectares of native forest in some of Brazil’s most valuable ecosystems. The restoration, conservation, and preservation of Brazilian forests will be enabled through the commercialisation of (committed) carbon credits.
Investment rationale
Biomas plans to combat deforestation by planting two billion native trees, as well as protecting and restoring 4 million hectares in Brazil over the next 20 years. As such the initiative will prevent around 900 million tonnes of carbon from being released in the next 20 years – approximately double of Brazil’s total annual emissions – and help protect more than 4,000 species of animals and plants. In addition to its environmental impact, the project will stimulate regional development and strengthen local communities through their involvement.
